Amazon vs Shopify: Where Should You Sell?

Why this usually isn't an either/or decision.

This is often framed as a choice, but for most brands it isn't really either/or — the two channels serve different purposes.

Amazon: built-in demand, less brand control

Amazon gives you access to buyers already searching with purchase intent, but you have limited control over the buying experience and pay ongoing referral fees.

Shopify: full control, you drive the traffic

Your own Shopify store gives full control over branding, checkout and customer data — but you're responsible for driving all the traffic yourself through marketing.

Most brands need both

Amazon for demand capture and discovery, Shopify for brand building and higher-margin direct sales — treating them as complementary rather than competing usually outperforms an either/or approach.
